Glide-snow avalanche characteristics at different timescales extracted from time-lapse photography

چکیده

Abstract Glide-snow avalanches release due to a loss of friction at the snow–ground interface, which can result in large that endanger infrastructure alpine regions. The underlying processes are still relatively poorly understood, part limited data available on glide processes. Here, we introduce pixel-based algorithm detect cracks time-lapse photographs under changing illumination and shadow conditions. was applied 14 years images Dorfberg (Davos, Switzerland). We analysed 947 glide-snow events high-spatial (0.5 m) temporal (2–15 min) resolution. Avalanche activity glide-crack opening dynamics were investigated across timescales ranging from seasonally hourly. Events separated into surface (meltwater percolation) interface (no meltwater percolation). results show is highly variable between within seasons. Most released without crack formation or 24 h after opening, favoured afternoon hours. Glide rates often showed stick–slip behaviour. acceleration non-constant increases aspect ratio indicators for avalanche release. This comprehensive dataset provides basis further investigations drivers.

Spatio-temporal Snow Depth Estimates from Time-lapse Photography

Applications using data collected with time-lapse photography provide estimates of snow glide intensities or the spatio-temporal extent of the snow cover. This is established by projecting the image onto a digital elevation model or counting the amount of dark pixels. In this study we identified the point of the shadow created by a mountain peak in an image and calculated the elevation of that ...

Time Lapse High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography

In this paper, we present an approach to a pipeline for time lapse photography using conventional digital images converted to HDR (High Dynamic Range) images (rather than conventional digital or film exposures). Using this method, it is possible to capture a greater level of detail and a different look than one would get from a conventional time lapse image sequence. With HDR images properly to...

Time-Lapse Light Field Photography With a 7 DoF Arm

A photograph taken by a conventional camera captures the average intensity of light at each pixel, discarding information about the angle from which that light approached. Light field cameras retain angular information about the rays they collect, allowing re-integration of rays during post processing. Consumer light field cameras have small apertures, and laboratory camera arrays with large ba...

Direct observation of female mating frequency using time-lapse photography.

One basic condition of postmating sexual selection is that females mate more than once before fertilizing their ova. Knowledge of the frequency and extent of multiple mating in a given population or species is therefore important in order to fully understand the potential for sexual selection, in the form of sperm competition, sexual conflict and cryptic female choice. Surprisingly, there are o...
